I recently had the chance to interview the Co-founder of Mossy Earth, Matthew Davies. Mossy Earth works to restore wild ecosystems, support wildlife and biodiversity and help fight climate change. They are the folks who plant a tree every time you buy from us!
Where are you based and how is it shaping you?
I am based in Sintra, Portugal. Sintra is a beautiful region and a unique place in that you can be surfing at a hidden cove in the morning and running in the mountains in the afternoon.
What are you excited about in the world?
That tackling the climate crisis and reversing the planet's loss of biodiversity is of great importance to an ever growing number of people and organisations. There is an exciting wave of environmental movements, as well as organisations with innovative solutions making great progress in tackling these problems head on.
What was the last book you read?
On Fire: The (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal - Naomi Klein
If you could re-invent something in the world what would it be?
Our educational systems; to incorporate the importance of protecting our natural world, sustainability, renewable energies, green technology, permaculture principles, and circular economies into the syllabus.
Do you have a quote or philosophy you live by?
"A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in." Greek Proverb
Favourite eco brand?
Patagonia, both in terms of their approach to the environment and sustainability, and the manner they treat their employees.
What song have you got on repeat at the moment?
Coastline by hollow Coves.
One person, that inspires you?
Anyone that dedicates their lives to helping others, protecting animals or conserving our natural world. Such selfless acts of kindness give me hope for humanity. But on a lighter note, Kilian Jornet, the world’s most acclaimed ultra-trail runner. Kilian is as humble as he is successful, who spends every day ‘playing’ in the mountains as if it was his last.
Do you have a goal or ambition you can share with us?
That within the next five years Mossy Earth has had a huge impact on nature restoration and rewilding.
